Returning is a video sculpture consisting of a 4 foot galvanized steel culvert, a 9" color studio monitor and custom stand, audio and video tracks, and a flat pedestal, 9 feet by 3 feet, covered in a layer of dry, cracked clay. The monitor is turned on its side to provide a vertical image, and is held aloft on the stand such that the screen is suspended three or four inches above the opening of the culvert. The monitor displays a small waterfall, the rocks in the creek still, but a continuous flow of water moving down the screen to the bottom edge just above the culvert. The audio track is the sound of the waterfall, and is coming from a speaker at the bottom of the culvert. The sound is audible as one approaches, but only in close proximity does one realize that the sound is echoing up through the culvert.
