Groundings is an ongoing body of large scale color photographs. The subject matter is natural materials collected from forest floors, presented either plainly, to recall the forest floor, or in geometric configurations of two or more different types of material, creating an unnatural composiition. The work depends upon three conditions of its making: The photographs are made in the studio, with artificial light, from a camera suspended above the material focused straight down upon it. The photographs are made using scanning technology, not film. This permits a much higher degree of definition, allowing an incredible sense of sharp detail in very large prints. The work is printed so that materials are represented at approximately 100% scale (life size).

This series of photographs provide an opportunity to experience the act of looking closely, to move from intricate detail to a more vast scale and back again. This movement mirrors the oscillation from chaos to order. The subject matter is that which is largely ignored or overlooked, or, at best, absorbed quickly in one full swoop. The subject is that which is normally at our feet, now presented flat straight out in front of us. Things normally held in place by gravity are set upright, lifted up onto the wall. While carrying forth with a dialog that concerns the realities and metaphors of nature, these photographs are also very much an examination of the phenomenon of looking.
